Will Medicare pay for skilled nursing?
Medicare Part A covers up to 100 days of skilled nursing facility care after a qualifying 3-day inpatient hospital stay, with full coverage for the first 20 days and a daily copay (currently $204/day in 2026) for days 21–100. Custodial long-term care is not Medicare-covered — that's where Medicaid or private pay takes over.
What's the difference between a short-term rehab stay and long-term skilled care?
Both happen in SNFs. Short-term rehab is post-acute recovery after a hospital stay — typically 14 to 28 days, Medicare-covered. Long-term skilled care is for residents whose medical complexity prevents discharge to a lower-acuity setting; this is private-pay or Medicaid after Medicare days run out.
